Counsel MORGAN then asked BUDENZ if he were aware of the many drafts —
which he prepared for his article which appeared in Colliers Magazine af - — \

of the article. BUDZKZ was asked by Senator GREEN if he had given the -° -. -.
information contained in this article to the F. B. I, and BYDENZ said that —
he assumed he had givdn the substance of It; that he had had many conferences
ith the F. B, I. and that he had always endeavored to provide them with the ..
benefit of the information which he possessed. BUDENZ again mentioned that -
there was a great projected plan of action as far as the Comunist Party was
concerned and that he felt that OWEN LATTIIORE was associated in this plan
that FIELD so indicated this fact to him. He then stated that FIELD sald that
OWEN LATTI‘ORE was responsible for placing writers_in the Chi field. oe

At this point, BUD=N2 mentioned the nane of JANES SJALLEN, the former
Communist representative in the Philippines, as also being connected with the
above described Communist plan, At this point, BUDENZ statedthat he recalled -
that the meeting which he had attended, which had peen called by BROWER,
also been attended by the following persons: FRERI3ROWN, J PETERS, HARRYAGAKZ,
CARLABRISSCN (all phonetic). BUDENZ explained that although BROWER had led
the sfeeting, that FIELD was the one who went forward with the discussion, He
mentioned that it was at this discussion that he gathered his impression about -
LATTIUORE.
- SYDENZ then nentioned that he was careful in his statenents about the
members who were formerly connected with the Catmunist Party and that he was
promoted to be so because he recalled that ed ai (phonetic) had state
that anyone who was formerly in the Party and wio was accused as being Communist
should gue for libel his accuser. BUDENZ stated that knowing this to be the
policy of the Party in the United States, he had to be particularly careful. - |
He pointed out that this was a complete chanze from the former policy of the § |
Party; that prior to the announcement of the policy by THACKSIBERG, no~one had ~
ever been p2rmitted to ever bring suit against any accuser who labeled then as
At this point of the hearing, Counsel for LATTIMORE, Mr. FORTAS, asked
the Chairman, Ure TYDINGS, if he could pass to the Camittee Counsel, Mr. MORTAN,'
questions which he wished to be asked of the witness, This request was granted ,
by TYDINSS and MORGAN was handed a list of prepared questions to ask BUDEINZ.
KORGAN, upon exanining the questions, asked BUDENZ if he could identify the et
page draft of the article which appeared in the Colliers Magazine. At this point,
Mr. FORTAS again asked the Chairman, Mr. TYDINGS, if he could have it understood .
that he did not receive this draft from the Colliers Magazine. He stated, "I
