Accessibility Statement

This accessibility statement applies to the SpookStack web application. It is intended to follow the structure commonly used for public-facing accessibility statements in the European Union, including references to EN 301 549 and WCAG-based review practices.

SpookStack aims to make declassified archival material, search tools, and reader workflows usable with keyboards, screen readers, zoom, and other assistive technologies.

Statement prepared on May 2, 2026. Last reviewed on May 2, 2026.

Conformance Status

This website is partially conformant with the accessibility requirements generally associated with EN 301 549 and WCAG 2.1 Level AA. Partial conformance means that some parts of the service may not yet fully meet the relevant accessibility standard.

The current statement is based on a self-assessment combining browser-based automated accessibility checks and implementation review of the main browsing, authentication, reader, consent, account, and administration surfaces.

Measures Taken

Keyboard and Focus Support
Primary navigation, authentication forms, consent controls, reader actions, and moderation workflows are intended to work with keyboard navigation.
Semantic HTML and Labels
Headings, buttons, forms, and major content regions are structured to improve compatibility with assistive technologies.
Automated Accessibility Testing
Key page types are checked in end-to-end tests for serious and critical automated accessibility violations before release validation.
Consent and Account Controls
Cookie preferences, account pages, and administrator tools are reviewed as part of the same accessibility smoke-test workflow.

Known Limitations

SpookStack publishes scanned archival material. Some accessibility limitations are caused by the source documents themselves rather than the application shell.

Historic Scan Quality
Some original page images are low contrast, skewed, damaged, handwritten, or otherwise difficult to interpret visually and through OCR.
OCR Accuracy Variability
Machine-extracted text may contain recognition errors, spacing issues, and reading-order problems, especially on noisy scans or mixed handwritten content.
Complex Archival Layouts
Tables, stamps, annotations, overlays, and marginal notes in scanned source material may not always be represented perfectly in the text alternative shown by the reader.

Feedback and Contact

If you find an accessibility problem, need information in an alternative format, or cannot complete a task because of a barrier in the service, you should contact the operator responsible for this deployment and describe:

The page or feature involved, what assistive technology or browser you were using, what happened, and what outcome you expected.

This deployment does not currently publish a dedicated accessibility email address inside the application interface. The operator should provide a direct feedback channel alongside the service or in accompanying legal or organisational materials.

Accessibility Feedback Form

Use this form to report an accessibility barrier directly to the service operator. Reports submitted here are stored for administrator review in the super-admin dashboard.

Enforcement Procedure

If you report an accessibility issue and do not receive a satisfactory response within a reasonable time, you may contact the relevant accessibility enforcement or equality body in the EU or EEA country responsible for supervising the service.

The exact authority depends on the member state in which the service provider is established or where the service is offered to the public.

Technical Information

SpookStack is designed to work with current versions of major desktop and mobile browsers and to remain operable with common assistive technologies that rely on semantic HTML, focus order, form labels, and text alternatives.

Accessibility review currently relies on automated browser testing for high-impact issues plus ongoing implementation changes to reading, search, correction, account, and administrative workflows.
