am stated he was primarily interested in the four periods thatj3VDENZ previou
mentioned in the sumarization of the testimony and that he would divide this
into the dates, naely: the periods of 1937, 1913, 19hb and 1945. u -
In connection with this, BUDENZ mentioned in going back over the period
that he was in the Perty, stated that he joined in August, 1935 because of the
Peovles Front policy as stated by the Seventh Congress of the Camnist Party
which said thet the Party would cooperate with World Tendencies. BUDEKZ statet™
that he vas comvinced at that time that the Camunist Party was the standard
bearer for the carion people. He ed then that BROWDER, after returning froan¥-
Moscow, urzed him along with GEIARTRAISLIR, to go into the open Party. He
stated that this was on October 2, 1935. He mentioned that he left the Party
on October 11, 19h5. yf
Then referring to the period 1937, BUDEI'Z stated in answer to question
that at that tine he first learned of OWE! LATTI{0nE. He stated that he believed
this was about October, 1937, at a meeting which he had attenied with BRCWDER. He
stated that LATTL‘OREts name was discussed at the time and he felt for the
purpose of faniliarizing himself with men considered important in the Party

afquiescence of Red China and Red Poland; that these two assizments were the
