™ Specimen K71 is a .45 Auto caliber U. S. Pistol,
Model {1911, semiautomatic pistol. The serial number, which ©
was pleced on the receiver of this pistol, has been
oblitgreted. Tre barrel of this pistol is rifled with six
lands and grooves, left twist (land width=.070 inch,
gropve width=, 140 inch).
Specimen K71 was very corroded and structurally
damaged by intense heat and the "cooxing-off* of the
. cartridges contained in the magazine. Present in the
Tagazine were six ruptured .45 Auto caliber unfired cartridge
cases anc five copper-jacketed, hollow-pointed unfired
-. bullets. The "FN 45 65" headstamos present on these cartridge
cases indicate that they were manufactured by Fabrique
Nationale d'Armes ce Guerre of Belgium. The noses of these
bullets appear to have been hollowed-out subsequent to their
manufacture. Two loose cartridge cases were also contained
in the pacxagé containing the K71- ‘pistol. One of these
cartridge cases bore a firing pin impression which indicated
it had been fired in the K71 pistol. This cartridge case bore
a "FC 5" neadstamp which indicates it was manufactured for
military use by the Federal Cartridge Corporation. Tne other
loose carciridye tase which bore a "FN 45 65" neaastamp, was not
Fired. It apparently "cooked-off." *
After being cleaned, the slide, extractor and barrel
of the K71 pistol were test fired on the: frame of a similar
pistol obtained from the Laboratory's Reference Firearms |
Collection. Inasmuch as the firing pin of the K71 pistol
was missing, the firing pin was also substituted. Therefore,
onlv the breechface, extractor and chamber mark ‘ings present
on the test fired occtridge cpses ara ralevant
It is noted that no .45 caliber bullets or cartridge
