cv 9-1308 On July 20, l960, CASEy STENGEL, Manager, New York Yankees Baseball club, was interviewed at the Cleveland Muni- cipal Stadium by SA and SA STENGEL advised that MANTLE had advised him on the previous day of the receipt of the threatening letter. He stated that he, himself, has received a number of crank letters. In fact, he'receives numerous crank letters all of the time in that the senders of these letters are complaining about how he runs the Yankees ball club. STengel. related that he has.not received. any threatening letters, and he has no suspects as to the per-- son who may have sent mAnTLE the letter.. On the same date, were contacted concerning the threatening letter, which was received by MANTLE, and all of the stadium police were alerted before the beginning of the night game, and they were all cautioned to keep this investigation confidential. On the same date, the following Special Agents covered the various entrances of the Cleveland Municipal. Stadium to be on the alert for any suspicious persons who may have been carrying firearms to the baseball game: SAs. No incidents occurred at the stadium or at the game. WILLIAM J. o'neIEA, Federal Building, advised that he desired that the threatening letter be sent to the FBI Laboratory for. examination and that investigation be made at Tonawanda, New. York, Before he renders a prosecutive opinion. No description was obtained from MAnTLE due to the fact that his description is well known and readiiy available. By letter dated August l, l96o, the Laboratory ad-- vised that the envelope and letter received by MAnrLE was. searched in the Annonymous Letter File without effecting an identification. On September 29, l960, this matter was again dis- cussed with Assistant United States Attorney O'NEilL by SA Mr. O'NElLL. stated that he desired no.
