According to the article, Roy Wilkins, Erecutive Secretary, of
the NAACP, spoke at a Civil Rights rally held at Madison
Sguare Garden, NYC, on 5-24-56, Wilkins was reported as
saying the Government could not "remain a neutral observer"
and it was "the dity of the Chief Erecutive, no natter what
hie party, to act pirmly to guide the nation in the obser-
vance of the law.’

The 6-1-56 issue of "Birninghan News," Birninghan
Ala., carried an article under the byline of Edwin Strickland
regarding a temporary injunction issued against the NAACP by
Judge Walter 8. Jones in Circuit Court, Montgomery, Ala. on
61-56, The article indicated that Roy Wilkins, Erecutive
Secretary of the NAACP, had stated in New York that the "NAACP
did not organize the Montgomery bus protest, but we joined
the rest of the country in hailing the people who did. We
did not employ Mrs. Autherine Lucy Foster to enroll at the
University of Alabama." Further statements made by Wilkins
tn defense of the NAA CP regarding the injunction were set out
in the article.
