and the plans for their transportation will be carried out with
_ the utmost secrecy in an endeavor to prevent any publicity what-
socever being given to the trips.
I am attaching hereto a scopy of the article on this
matter appearing in the noon edition of thexXKansas City Journal
Post for Ooteber 18, 1933, The article did not appear in the later
editions of the Kansas City Journal Post, and no article concern-
ing this matter appeared in any of the editions of the Kansas City
Ster. .
You will note that the fourth paragraph is somewhat
derogatory concerning Special Agent in Charge R. EB. Vetterli. Al-
though the reporter who called Mr, Conroy in the morning only gave
hie surnaze as Smith, not stating hia given name, it is my personal
opinion that the reporter in question waa Gilbert}Smith, who covers
quite a few cases out of the Federal Building heré, and who was in
the Kansas City Divieion Orfice numerous times inumediately eubse-
quent to the Union Stetion Kassacre on June 17th. Smith ie an
individual whom 1 have known personally for several years, though
not intimately, and I know him to have a very unpleasant disposition,
I feel quite positive that he disliked Mr. Vetterli due to the fact
that Mr. Vetterli repeatedly refused to give him any news. Of course,
Lr. Smith wae treated by Mr. Vetterli in the eame manner as any
other newspaper reportera in view of the Department's and Division's
policy on sullicity.

me as to the source of the news appearing in the Kansas City Journal
Post. During my conversation with Dick Smith he advised me the ine
formation had been obtained from some red cap or employee at the
Union Station, Kansas City, Kissouri.
I am attaching hereto memorandum prepered by Special Agent
Ww. Fe Trainor concerning the preparations made for the assembling
and transportation of these witnesses to Leavenworth, which memo-
randum is self-explanatory.
Subsequent to my telephonic conversation with you the
Yerden at the main penitentiary, as well as the Deputy Warden at
tie Penitentiary Annex, at Leavenworth, wero both advised the trip
hed been cancelled due to unfortunate publicity which hed been given
