On the morning of October 16, 1935, 4t was planned to
take the Government witnesses in the above case to Leavenworth,

Journal Post, and received information concerning this conteme

knew about the same. Mr, Conroy refused to confirm or deny the
report, but requested that the article be not printed as it would
interfere with the investigation of this case. Smith advised Mr.
Conroy thet he could not pereomlly pasa on whether the story wma
to be printed or not as he was only a reporter, and be would have -
to refer the mtter to the Managing Editor of his paper.

Believing that thie information might also have been ob-
tained by the Kansas City Star, kr. Conroy requested me to personally
call upon Roy Roberts, Managing Editor of the Kanens City Star, and
request that an article concerning the contemplated trip of these
witnesses to Leavenworth be not printed. Accordingly, I did cali
upon hr, Roberts at hie office at the Kansas City Star at approxi-
mately 9:40 AeM., end expleined the situation to him and requested -
that the matter be not printed. Mr. Roberte expressed his opinion |
that the same should not be printed and agreed that he would contact tee ea
