Director-3,
; I admit that I went to Leavenworth to interview the used
car dealer, to see if he had any information on this case, at the suggest-
ion of Mr, Reppert. I went along with one of hie officers, but this of~
ficer was seated at in front in his car at the tims I ransacked the deak
of the used car dealer at Leavenworth, and ran ecross the wire fram Sub ject
Walter McGee frou Amarillo, Texas. ‘Mr. Reppert did not have any idea that
we would find any such informtion there, in fact, thought we might poss-
idly secure something of Subject's history in this kidnmping case fran this
used car dealer, Abo Starr. If I hadn't acted according to my own hunch, and
searched his desk, and found this wire, the police officer sitting out in
front in hie car would never have known of it, and Welter McGee would now
be elsewhere. ; .
In fact, to show you how far the Police were wrong, they
had sent one or two men to Portland, Oregon, with a Post Office Insyector,
where they thought they might be able to locate Walter McGee, and were ap~
proximately two thousand miles or more off the track, They had also dis-
patched mn by plane to Minneapolis, and I mde arrangements for Ur. Hamil
to assist then, and further, in reality, the Police were looking in almst
every section of the country for Walter licGee, but the particuler section
where he was at that tim. ;
While the Police chartered a private plane to go to Texas,
Y went down, and having been deputized as a United States Marshal, re-
turned them, This saved the State considerable time and mney, saved extra-
dition proceedings, and facilitated the mtter a great deal. Further, Mr.
Reppert personally called me one dey, and stated he wanted an Agent in-
mediately to fly with certain of his officers to Stockton, Kansas, where
they thought they would be able to find MoGee, and acordingly I wont dom
to see Mr. Reppert with Special Agent Suran, end Suran made the trip by |
plane to Stockton, Kanses, with Kansas City Police officers, _
Mr. Reppert has persomLly told me that we did a good piece
of work, as well as Chief of Detective Higginge § — .
“ Judge McElroy, in my presence, personally thanked Mr. Nathan
for the assistance of the Division. ; a,
Mr, Mastin, the prosecuting attorney at Kansas City, has
from time to time expressed his appreciation for the assistance of the «.
Divigion, as well as his assistants, eni atated the case would not have been
made without the assistance of the Division. Mr. Mastin, I believe, per=
ponally sent a long wire to the Attorney General, thanking him for the
assistance of the Division, and particularly mentioning the writer end Mr.
Foenan,
