Directoar=—=2,
With respect to the second point, the deploy of men, I can .
only state that hindsight is better then foresight. I understood that the ap-
prehension of Frank Nash was ea secret, that he had been whisked away, and no
one knew they were caning into Kansas City the morning of the 17th, and ny
understanding, according to telephonic information, was that the entire mtter
was secret, However, in spite of this fact, the precautions were taken, al~
though we did not deploy the men. We were not bunched together, however. We
were spread out covering a distance of about twenty feet through the station
end out to the car, Further, we looked over the situation underneath the
station, and we were very careful in proceeding to the car, but there did not
appear to be anything irregular.
It is true that we could have taken Frank Nash off underneath
the station, placed him in a car after crossing several reilroad tracks, and
fran there taken him to Leavenworth, tut as I recell, there wae a telephone
conversation developed later, in which it was stated "they had the matter cove
ered three ways", I believe we would have encountered the same difficulties
if we head tacen Nash off under the station, and believe if we had taken him
to Leavenworth as we planned to do, we probably all wuld have been Milled on
the way up there. ra .
With respect to the thinl point, nemely, that the Police Depart-
“ment did not need the assistance of the Federal Agents in the McElroy kidnap-
ing case, all I have to say is that they accepted everything we developed, and
41f tho writer had not found the wire at Leavenworth in the used car dealer's .
shop, mo doubt the man who has now been sentenced to death would have been into
Mexico long since, In fact, the Police Department was looking everywhere else
in the country, with the exception of the southwestern portion, et which point
Valter McGee had headed. They my not have needed the assistance of the Federal
Agents, but it ts a peculiar thing thet Mr. Reppert had telephoned me persomlly
at my home, on several occasions on this kidnaping case, ani requested that I -
ge elong with him on certain mglea, which I did, If they had not needed our
assistance, why should the Direotor of Police personally call me at my home,
and request my assistance? . ;
. I am frank to give credit to the Police Department tor securing
the first information m the identity of the kidmapers, But I am also frank ~~
to atate if it had not been for the Division, the Folice Department probably |
never would have had Subject Walter McGee, who has now been sentenced to die, .
Further, Agent Schoales at Roanoke, Virginia, asaisted in this caes, and he
will be @ necessary witness at the trial of George MeGee, and the writer will ~
be a necessary witness in the trial of Clarence Click,
Judge McElroy, City Manager of Kansas City, has frequently ex
pressed his appreciation for what wae done, and so has hie dauhter, Mary, who
was the victim. Why the thanke if the Division di4 not render any services?
