5 Reference is made to a telephone call fran Mr, Vincent Hughes
of the Division today, and a later call fram the Director, regarding a taik
de by Eugend Reppert, Director of Folice, Kansas City, Miseouri, in which
‘she criticized Agents in the Nash case, and stated that they could have .
gotten along well @ough in the ‘McElroy kidna ping case without the Federal
Agente.
The first point to be covered 1 was with respect to the notife
Scat ion of the Police by the writer, /When I received informtion by long dis-
tance telephone from Oklshom City, m the evening of June 16, 1935, at ny res-
' idence, with respect to the apprehension of Nash, and the statement to the ef-
fect he would arrive at Eensae City 7:15 the next morning, under guard of Spec-
fel Agente Smith, Lackey, and Chief of Police Ott Reid, I immediately telephoned
Chief of Detectives Higgins at the Police Department, Kansas City, Missouri, end
ascertained he had gone home, and accordingly, in the presence of Mre. Vetterli,
I endeavored to reach Chief of Detectives Higgins at hie home address, which ~
was furniehed m by the Police Department, and for a period of thirty or forty-
five mimutes no one answered his telephone, eo J again called the Detective
".:. Bureau of the Police Department, and requested their assistance in this matter,
and they stated they would have a cruiser sent around to assist. ~
I then advised the individual at the Detective Bureeu that
the party they were bringing through was Frank Nash, a notorious figure, an a
escaped Federal convict, end a bad man, and they replied that in view of this -
fact, they would send the two men on what they termed the “hot shot", ar riot —
car, The men on this car are supposed to be the beat, and are sent cut in case
of serious trouble, equipped with machine guns, etc., so that in reality, while
Mr, Reppert might not have known that Frark Nash was coming through, the Detective
‘ Division did, and as a result, the “hot shot” car was sent eround, and not an -
ordinary cruiser. I received the call fram Oklehana City at my residence. Mre.
Vetterli was the only individual present who heard my conversation, although I
do not know what ashe recalle in connection with this matter,
