Agent Lackey asked the Police at Little Rock the road f
to Joplin, Missouri, when leaving there, knowing that the same Highway leads
to Joplin and Fort Smith from Little Rock for a distance of SO miles outside
of Little Rock, It was intended to drive to Fort Smith, but the destination
was not mentioned to anyone and Joplin, Missourl, only was mentioned to those
officers. The Agents then drove on to Fort Smith, Arkansas, where they
arrived at 6 Pell, June 16th. . .
At Fort Smith, through official orders from the Attorney -
General of the United States, issued through the Director of the United Statés
Bureau of Investigetion, Agents Lackey and Smith, assisted by Police Officer
Reed, boarded the Missouri Pacific Railroed train with prisoner Nash end
left Fort Snith in that manner at 8:50 P.M. June 16th. Tickets were pur .
chased at Fort Smith for the group for Kaneae City, Missouri, on a Governe
ment Transportation Request. fhe Agents and Mr, Reed gave no indication to —
' anyone es to where they were taking the prisoner while et Fort Smith, and
the Ticket Agent there was cautioned to tell no one to what point the
tickets had been purchased.
Bowever, 1¢ appears that there was a "leak® in the ti cket
office as to the destination of the Agents ani prisoner. -
4 press report on the evening of June 16th was issudé at
whose official identities were known, had proceeded from Fort Snith by way
of the Missouri Pacifie Railroad for Kansas City, Missouri. Agent Lackey
learned that thero was ea news reporter in the Missouri Pacific Railroad Station
when he purchased the tickets and that individual saw the prisoner and the
officers, and evidently learned from the ticket office the destination of the
groupe
A press dispatch dated June 16, 1953, at 10:06 P.M., Fort
Smith, Arkansas, for the prese at Kansas City, Missouri, reads es follows:
“FRANK NASH AND AGENTS ARE ON MISSOURI PACIFIC TRAIN ARRIVING
KANSAS CITY MISSOURI AT 7:15 A.M.*
It ie well known that the Hot Springs, Arkansas Police
Department is intimately connected with Subject Galatas, and others, in this -
ease, and that information is available to the Police Department of Hot
Springs through the Associated Frese in edvance of publication. Evidently
the cohorts of Galatas eecured information on the night of June 16th that
the Agents and prisoner were bound for Kansas City, Missouri, on the train
which they took as will later appear in connection with telephone calls and
pieans of operations by the slayors.
