1:00 and was taken by Captain Martin. Captain Martin made a short report
of the compleint mede and proceeded to the Highway sith other detectives,
‘Subsequently a call was received from Akers advising that the
persons had been stopped at Benton by tte Sheriff's officera who allowed
then to proceed after representations that they were Federal Officers.
dkers suggested that this be verified by Little Rock Police, expressing
his opinion that they probably were "fakes". A telephone call was then
made by Scrosgine to Police Station 555, which is on the highwey where the
officers wore stationed, and Captain Martin was inforned of Akers’ calls
Subsequently, after the Federal Officers had been intercepted at
Little Rock, a ¢all was received from Akere, who asked to speak to Captain

Cepteain O N. Martin, of the Detective Force, Little Rock Police,
was interviewed and verified the fact that he had received the first call
from Eot Springs, stating that the party celling gave his neme as Butkalew,

at approximately 12:35 P.li. and thet he made a short report, which was

Highway with other officers, and while there received a call fram head~

A ehort time thereafter the officers with that prisoner appeared
and were atopped by police, and properly identified themselves. They ine
quired as to directiona out of the elty of Little Rock, stating that they
were enroute to Joplin on the Ft. Smith Highway. Captain Kartin directed
two of the detectives to escort the party throuch Little Rock and place -
them on the proper road. The party did not reveal the identity of their
prisoner but did state that he wae a gangster and that they feared inter~
vention by his associates. Captain Mertin also advised that some conversa-
tion was had by the Agents to the effect that they. would proceed to Ft.
Smith end then to Tulsa, where they would take a plane, presumably for
Joplin. .
After tke Federal Officers and detectives had proceeded it occurred
to Captain Kartin that the best route to Joplin would be through the moun-
tains, leaving the Ft. Srith Highway at Conway, Arkenses. Fe accordingly
telephoned to headquarters and instructed that this suggestion be given to
the party when they passed the Police Station on their way through Little:
