Payton was interviewed by Agente of thie offies, and, while he ms
severely wounded, he was able to converse sith them. He stated that
he. and Conn separated from Batley and other suspects in this case —
shortly after thelr escape on May W, 1635, at Lansing, and had not = -
seen then since. There is at the present time no definite indica-
tion that Conn or Payton could have engaged in the slayings which Oce |
eurred at Kansas City in thie case. L
Reference is made to letter from the Bureau dated July 17, 1933, with ~
enclosure from Charles M, Mahr, Bluffton, Inciana, wherein Mahr edvis-
es that the elayers in this ratter live in or come from Sullivan ~
County, Missouri. It may be noted that Harvey Eailey has resided at
Green City, Miseourl, which is in Sullivan County.

Indiana, in order thet Mr. Mehr, ¢are of the Ments Wear Shop, my be
very discreetly interviewed for the basia of his information. - Ap-
propriate attention is teing given to possible developments in Sulli-e
ven County, around Green City, Missouri.
Mra. E. Erie Smith, 6623 Edgevale Road, Kansas City, Missouri, tele-
phoned this office "recently stating that her laundress had observed
persons leaving 6612 Edgevaie Road on Wednesday morning, following
the slayings of June 17th(June flet}). She stated that the laundress
observed a woman end « man. The man appeared to have the use of only _
one arm.--It is possible that the man seen was Subject Vernon C. Miller,’
who lived at that address, as he was reported to be wourted in one arm,
but this has not been verified. It may be stated here that the sup-
position hae been advanced by Thomas J. Higgins of the Kansas City,
Missouri, Police Department that officer Hermonson fired his pistol
when the aseassine in thie case firet appeared. It hae been establish-
ed through ezaminction of the weapons at the Kansas City, Missouri,
Police Department by Mr. Higgins that the pistol of Hermanson bad been
fired twice,
4n interview will be later reported with the laundress nentioned by
Mrs. Srith.
It was ascertained and reported telephonically by Special Agent in
Charge Colvin of the Oklahoma City office that Galatas was reported on °
July 17th to be at Reno, Nevada. This informstion ms secured, {t ms
deceased Frank Nash at the time he was apprenenied on June 16, and
