Re: JOEF L, LEWIS, ET AL INTROV IE "During this time from 1932 to 1937, I did not notice that UI ever set up a picket line at mine "B” and —_—eee I do not remember ever sesing any literaturg for UM at mine "B", Fo one at any time during this neriod cver tried to got me to join UMW. But I did notice that there was sone kind of movement out there on the part of UM and I could tell there was some convention on the part of the men out at Mine "B", but I can not tell just what it was. During this tine I did not notice that there were any URW spics in PMA, and I did not notice the UMV activities of some PHA men who vere expelled from PUA for working for UMM, excepting that these men who were expelled vere the same men who I noticed wers in those little groups of mon who were in thet mevorest I mentioned and who were having some sort of contention. By convastion, J moan that there was som sort of dissatisfaction, and that everything was not satisfactory. "rhe men who scomed dissatisfied were: Charlie Eohannon, Jimmie Hale, Frank Austin, and a few more, I would sce them talking together all the timc, but none of them ever tried to talk me into joining UMW, I never notice any of these men with any of the company men or officials, and I never saw them together socially. "TY think the reason there was a strike at the Mine "EB" on Nay le, 1937, was because the PA union hed expelled some of the men I have mentioned ebove ané tho company refused to fire then, I do not remember anything sbeut. A wage scale controversy in the Spring of 1937 except when the PMA contract expired atout that time. But I never thought that was the reason for the strike. "T gid not attené & PMA meeting on May 11, 1937, the night before the strike. On Mey 12, 1937, I went to work os usual and went down into the mine. There was no indication to me of any strike pending. I did not notiec any cars being loaded short during the day and no one told me to load my ears short, I worked the ontirc day and no one told me to stop. I came to the tor of the mino after vork and altho I hoard some of tho men say ve wore going to strike and I noticed some cers had been loadic short, still Y did not know wo wore on strike until the next day. “On Yay 13, 1937, I went to work, but everyone said no work and ve were on strike, so I came right back home, and in the afternoon I started working on a farm. . “During the time aftcr the strike, I do not remember signing any petitions, either for FMA or for WN, But 1 may have signed one for PHA and have forgotten. 1 am certain I did not sign one for UMW, _@ 215 = Sa a a ale 6 EP -e ieae aI ELT te ie Sere. ee ary |
