MITE "I believe I heard in the summer of 1957 that 4 new
UMN local was organized, but I do not known anything
continue about that. I do not remember attending any meetings
of any kind during the sumncr of 1937, and 1 was
busy working on the farm and didn't have much time for meetings.
*f co not ronomber being called by the company to come to work
any time after ? Nay 12, 1937, until Fov. of 1939, I never did go back to
work during that time, I do remember a picket line.was set up at Mine "B"
by the PUA in about Sept. of 1937, but I do not believe I was at the mine
the first day the picket line was set up. J do not believe I was told by any
PYA men in Sept., 1937 that Mine “E" was ¢cius to open, But after the picket
line was set up for ebovt two months, “= b:.ieve I went out to mine "B" to
picket just on one Sunday. J was busy at inc farm, I was not there when
the picket line prokc up and I do not know why the picket line broke up.
"T yomenbir the Yational Labor Relations Board held an election in
about Dec. of 1937 at which time the FUA beat the UMW. I voted in this
election and 1 think it wes a fiir election and no one forced or threatened
me in any way".
“J do not know of any attempts om the part of the company to open
Mine "B" before Nov. of 1939,
"In Nov. of 1929, I might have got a letter from the company to
come back to work, or maybe Bumgarnor told me, and I reported for work. But
the pert of “fine "B™ whore I had been working in 1937 was shut down from
cave ins, and so tho company put my name on the waiting list and I did not
go back to work until Jan. of 1940. jihen I went back to work I was still
amember of Pha.
“rrom the time IJ went back to work in Jan, of 1940 umtil I joined
the UT in the fall of 1940, no one at any time tried to talk me into
joining the U:% and no onc at any time threatened me or tried to force me
to join t%. I joinsd U7, I believe about the first of August, 1940,
becausc it looked like if I wanted to keep my job I would have to join BMW
and it looked like most of the men wore joining UlMf,. I do not know of any
attempts on the part of UE to organize minc B during this time, But at
the same time I noticed thcre was a lot of talking going on around the mine
and I saw a lot of strangers working in the mins, and so & thought there
wos sgoms organizing going on, so when I say I do “not know of any attompts
on the part of UN’ to organize Lune "B™, I mean that I did not sce any
specific attempts by them like forcing a man to sign or fighting or the
like.
