essee, is employed at the Highlander Folk School and lives there at the
prescnt time, SRM Postmster at Montcagle, Tennessee, says
LOUISE CONKLING/ is secretary of the school and recently replaced Miss
LOUISE GRATH.LY DICHMAN, who is presently residing at 233 West idJenomonee

Miss JANW.LLEN was reported by QD to have
arrived at the school on about March 15, 1941 and seems to be helping
earry on the business of the school, but her exact duties and position
are not knorm. She is believed to be from Flint, hichigag as letters
from the school are being addressed to Mr. and irs. W, Rf ALIEN, 1701
East Hamilton ‘venue, Flint, Michigan. Letters addressed to Flint, Mich-
igan did not make their appearance until after Miss ALLEN arrived at the
school,
Mr, “C. H. KILBY, an employee of the tocuesseo Consolidated \
Coal Company, whose office is at Tracy City, Tennessce, has been extremely }
interected in getting the Highlander Folk School out cf Grundy County
because of the trouble they have stirred up there among the WPA employees
and the bugwood cutters and this matter has almost reached the point of
being an obsession with him. He has organized a committee of local resi~
dents of the better class which call themselves the Grumdy County Crusaders,
_whoee sole purpose is to combat the Highlander Felk Scheol and its teach-
ings. The antagoniam that each of these groups feels for the other has
‘reached such a point that there was danger of open conflict between them
during November of 1940 and it was feared for a time that local citizens
would burn the Highlander Folk School building. In 211 contacts in this
investigation, the persons interviewed were questioned regarding kr. KILBY
and they were uniformly of the opinion that he is a reputable citizen
and that his feeling toward the school is a patriotic desire to rid the
county of a subversivs influence. These interviewed were also questioned
regarding the possibility of Mr, KILBY'S position with the coal company
and the labor troubles which coal companies occasionally have being
responsible for his feoling in the matter, but everyone advised they had
never heard Mr. KILBY make any remarks against orgsnized labor and in fact
believed that he was entirely in favor with it. There wes no evidence
thet the Tennessee Ccnsclidated Coul Cempany was furnishing any financial
aid to bir. KTLPY er rocvesting that be carry on his activities against the
school.
