Hend It has been brought to the Bureau's attention that Hans Eisler =; ei ——— made application at the State Department on June 19 for an exit permit to Mf; Mus proceed to Paris, France. You will recall that a short time ago Hans Mise Ganay Eisler appeared before the House Un-American Activities Comittee in Los Angeles and due to his uncooperative attitude was requested to appear be- ur fore the full Committee in Washington on June 12. This hearing however was ed cancelled. It is apparent that the Un-American Activities Committee investi- ° /- 7 gators have been attempting today to locate Hans Eisler in order to subpoena .. 7” - {| him to appear before the Committee in Washington. 7 wr re reer an investigator for the Un-American Activities Com mittee, has been conference with the State Department today and has re- - quested that no exit permit be issued to Eisler to leave the United States. The State Department has advised thru liaison channels of the Bureau that no action will be taken on Eisler's application and that officially it is in a 4 e >’ "pending status". It further appears that the Un-American Activities Committe and the State Department have requested that INS not issue a re-entry permit jlto Eisler in the event he is successful in leaving the U.S. € ‘ —- of the State Department has confidentially advised that Eisler is being sought in California, Washington and New York without success ,and that possibly he has succeeded in leaving the U.S, at one of the Mexican border stations. He stated that the ILN Service has apparently attempted to place stops but that they are ineffectual upon a short notice.
