Mauser-designed for the 1889 Bel-
attern rifle, the 7.65mm was alsu adapted by
Argentina, Bolivia. Columbia. Ecuador, Peru and Tur-
cal Notes
key. In the United States. Remington and Winchester
loaded sporting ammunition and furnished rifles in this
caliber until about 1936. It has heen obsolete in the
ALS. since that time, but sporting ammunition has al-
ways been loaded in Europe. The Remington Model
30 and Winchester Model 54 holt action rifles were
chambered for the 7.65mm and jt enjoved a Jimited
pepularity for a few years. With the influx of 1891
Argentine Mauser military rifles, it is having another
go-round on the American market.

Historical Notes ‘TRe 8mm Lebel was the firat gmalt
bore smokeless powder military cartridge developed hy
any world power. The carf?idge and the Lebel holt ac-
{ion rifle were both adopted ie W&R6. Its rimmed case
was not well-adapted to automatic YALTIS S80 it wag re-
plared by the rimless 7.5mm round in 1936. Remington
manufactured Lebel rifles and ammunifion for the
French government during WW I. When the wayende

it adequate for anything except possibly the biz brown
bears in close cover.
Primers are Berdan 6.5mm or .217", & size availahle -
in several European makes. Occasionally one encounters
discontinued American made cases or ammunition, and
these use tirge rifle (.210") primers. Cases can be made
from empty .30-06 brass by using case forming dies
available from several American manufacturers. Bullet
Size is .313°, but 311” or .312” diameter bullets will give -
satisfactory accuracy. This cartridge case is also similar
to the 7.7mm Arisaka and these can be used to form _
7.65mm brass. Norma-made cases and loaded ammuni-
tion are now imported with Boxer primers.
wn up. The 8mm Lebel cartridge is in about
730-40 Krag class and makes a fine caliber for cleer
srough elk hunting. Remington stitl sts 8mm Lebel
spurting ammunition and it can be purchased jn most
of the larger cities. Plenty of good 323” pulfes are
available and American cases can easily be ploaed,
(jlitary cases have Berdan primers of .199” pr .216
