Leon Smith, Duty Agent in Domestic Intelligence Division, telephonically advised SA Bowers of the then available information concerning the shooting of Senator Robert Kennedy. Smith also advised that Miss Jean Stack, personal secretary to Senator McCarthy, had called Bureau Headquarters from Los Angeles a short time earlier seeking to contact Bowers. After advising you (Mr. Bishop) of the foregoing information, Bowers telephonically contacted Miss Stack at telephone number 213 274- !2555 in Los Angeles. Miss Stack stated the Senator had instructed her to ‘ contact the FBI and she wanted to know what action they should take = ~~ : Bowers advised her we are in no position to offer advice regarding the ' safety of the Senator. She was reminded that she had been told when contacted concerning a procedure to handle threats against the Senator on 3-25-68, that the FBI has no authority to provide protection. She was told she would have to rely on local authorities for protection. She then asked who could check the plane on which Senator McCarthy would be flying back to Washington later in the day. She was told this too would have to be taken up with local authorities, _ BES CVn as er nC 7 A a Miss Stack was informed that we have kept her promptly 4 2.5 advised of any information we have receivéd concerning threats to Senator, McCarthy and she was assured that we would continue to do so.~ She was ~~" told that shouldste have any reason to promptly contact the FBI she could do so by calling our Los Angeles Office. Miss Stack indicated Senator, - McCarthy would be returning to Washington later in the day. ...
