of these meteor showers norvally produce extremly bright green firebells
such as thooe recently obeerved. For example, the observation mentioned by
Mr Monnig (Inciient 231) appenred near the maximum of the Quadrantid shower
of early Japusry, Mr McOullough's observation of August was mear the time
of the Persid shower (Incident 230) ani the December observations (223, 2c3ea
224, 226, 227, MP fell in the interval covered by the Geuinid shower.
This relationship it indicate an attempt to render the green fireballs less
mY dy caus: them to appesr only when there is considerable meteoric
activity.
hb. As noted in an earlier commmic.tion the remarkably vivid green
color renorted for wst of the Decerber fireballs is rarely observed in the
case of gemine meteors, By leboratory test thie pemliar color seems to Le
identical with ti st given off by copper salts in the blowpipé flame. If this
identification is correct, the vavelengti of the radiation from the green
fireballs io near >} 521B A.
1. The duration estimates of be' ween 2 and 3 aeconds reported for the
green fireballe are considerebly longer than those (0.4 - 0.5 seconds) for
the ordinary vieual meteors, but shorter than the dmretion estimates invar~
{ably reported in the cave of a gomiine meteorite fall (5 té 30 seconin or
even longer).
j. Hone of the green fireballs seex to have a train of sparks or a
dust cloud following. This contrasts sharply with the dDehavior noted in
ease of meteoric fireballs - partioularly those thst penetrate to the very
low levels where the green fireball of December 12 wis observed.
WTS: Inquiry at Holloman AF Base, Alemagordo, N. K., revealed that
Tesearch work et night and om Sundays does not involve the use of
any lighting device or flares suth as described in the various
reports submitted.
