ROOSEVELT. He described the appointee as one of the really great men of "this age". He stated the appointee's moral character is of the highest and that anything which FORTAS undertook for the United States Government would be for the well being and betterment of the United States. He stated he could say this for very few men that he has known over the years. He stated he could not recommend the appointee too highly as to his reputation, loyalty and dedication to whatever he undertakes. Mr. ADOLF BE 7O Pine Street, New York, New York; tone Asetotant Secretar _of State, advised on October 29, 1964, that he hags_known the appointee very wel] for over twenty-five years. He stated that he first met the appointee when the Tattér Was at Yale Law School, and He got to ‘mow him well in 1938 when he (BERLE) was ASSIstant Secretary of State and the appointeé Was Drider Secretary of the Interior. He Gdvised that since they both left the Government, they have served together on the Board of Directors” of SuCrest Corporation and have seen other frequently ove? thé years. He nas had continuous contact with him over the past fifteen years. Mr. BERLE stated that FORTAS is an extremely active man with legal and business connections. He has been counsel in the past for the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and he (BERLE) Is a member of the Board of Htpner Education for the Common- wealth of Puerto Rico, and they have had contact through this mutual interest. He advised that the appointee possesses a h moral character, that he has had an Honorable’ Career with the United States Govérriment and a brilliant career "before the bar", He advised that there has never been "a whisper of anything part ALSper r derogatory concerning his moral character". “He advised fhe appointee's personal life is irreproachable, and he is happily married to his wife, the latter whom he holds in high regard. ar rT - 3 uh RE ‘
