During the period ir. Fortas was in the New Haven,
Ceanecticut, area he was on the faculty of Yale University.
Im May, 1939, Mx. Fortas was employed as general
Ceuasel with the Federal Emergency Administration of Peblic
Werks in Washington, D. C.
In July, 1939, he was employed as General Counsel
with the Mational Bituminous Ceal Commission, Department of the
Interior, Washingtoa, D.C. Effective March, 1941, he was
transferred as General Counsel of the National Power Policy
Committee, and in July, 1941, he was reassigned as Acting
Mirector and transferred to the office of the Secretary of the
Division of Power, In November, 1941, he was reassigned as
Director of the Division of Power. Im June, 1942, he was
reasbigned as Under Seretary of the Interior. He remained
in that position watil January, 1946, with the exception
ef the period from Nevember 16, 1943, to January 5, 1944, when
he was on military leave.
During the time Mr. Fortas was associated with the
Department of the Interiox he also served on various boards
and committees, including the War Resources Ceuacil;
Emergency Resources Committee of the National Resources
Planmning Board; Food Advisory Committee. Beard of Legal
Examiners; Committee on International Electric Pover Matters;
Civil Service Commission; Committee on Legal Personnel; and
the Committee to Study Organic Law of Puerto Rico. He was
also adviser to the United States delegation to the United
Mations in San Francisco, California, in 1945, and in
Lendon, England, in 1946.
In June, 1962, he was appointed a member of the
President's Committee on Equal Opportunity in the Armed Forces
asd in August, 1964, he was appointed a member of the Board
of Trustees of the John Fitagerald Kennedy Ceater for the
Performing Arts.
