It will be recalled that thia ita the case in which
Congresenan Overton Brooks of Louistana teok an tnterest. On
the eventing of March 3, 1947, the Bureau recetuved inquiries
from the prees regarding ao stctement tesued by the Congresenan
on the case tn which he denounced the FBI as a result cf the
prosecuttve action tnetituted tn Loutsteanc, growing out of the
of an i al ee Jones on dugust & 1946, and the beating
of near Minden, Loutat ona.
Fith reference to Marshall's allegation, the Director
advised the Attorney General that reports of the investigation
tn that cose were forwarded to the Crimtnal Diviston under the
caption, "Deputy Sheri et al; John
Cecil Jones an etima; Civil Rights
and Domestic Wrolence. 8 case involved the release of two
Negroes by Deputy Sher! (/ (ED to G mob of men who took then
t gnd severely bect theR, as a result of which Jones died but
GP oi rvi ves’ A number of eye witnesses, eome of whom were
Fegroes, tdentified some of the members of the mob and one
Fegro informant reported what he believed to be a@ list cf the
tndtutduals tnvolved but had no evidence to aubstontiate his
beliefs.
