KING what KING's position should be to a proposed April, 1968,
College Presidential Poll. LEVISON suggested that KING's position
should be that he did notwant to be included as a potentiel
candidate because his candidates are those who oppose the Vietnam
war and who support the principles of the Presidential Commission
on Civil Disorders. LEVISON said the only two candidates who
reflect these views were Senators KENNEDY and MC CARTHY. LEVISON
paid, if KING was a candidate, it could split the college poll and
result in President JOHNSON being the winner. They agreed that
whate w
the only possibility of stopping JOHNSON would be with KENNEDY.

the position in which KING found himself as a result of the
violence that occurred following the march he led throu h down
Memphis in support of the striking garbage men on 3/28/ rine n was
discouraged and felt the image of the SCLC had been hurt ond
that the PPC was in trouble. KING was fearful for the future
of his non-violent philosophy, his own image and leadership.
On this date, LEVISON and MARTIN LUTHER KING discussed
LEVISON attempted to dissuade KING that his reasoning
was incorrect, that KING could not get or expect 100% adherence
to his philosophy of non-violence. He counseled that as far
as the PPC is concerned KING can say that he could control his
followers and was not undertaking to control everyone else.
KING was not persuaded and they a zeed to discuss
the matter at a meeting in Atlanta on 3/30/68
