9-2-60. The purpose of this call was not known; however, it is noted thaf was be C
sentenced by a North Carolina court on 11-3-60 to a two to three year sentence for
conspiracy and four to six year sentence for felonious larceny. -
On 1-24-61 the Boston SAC advised that
Boston, Massachusetts, had confidentially advised that Joseph P. Kennedy
had expressed an interest in placing "Teddy" as the Assistant District Attorney of Suffolk
County. [ __Jadvisea he had heard statements attributed to the President that he was not
satisfied with political conditions in the Democratic Party in Massachusetts and surmised
-| that the President was using this way to get "Teddy" into politics. It is noted that "Teddy"
was sworn in as an Assistant District Attorney on 2-7-61. Kennedy indicated he would
accept a fee of $1 and wave the remainder of his $5, 000 salary. —
In July, 1961, Edward Kennedy made a familiarization and orientation tour
of Central and South Aniehican countries. During this tour, the Mexico City Legal Attache
reported that Kennedy had expressed an interest in meeting with "Leftists" to talk with
them and determine why they think as they do. Kennedy met with a number of individuals
iiknown to have communist sympathies. While in Mexico City, Kennedy asked the Ambassib
to invite left-wingers to the Embassy where he could interview them; however, the
Ambassador refused to do so and stated that if any such interviews were to be conducted
all arrangements would have to be made by Kennedy himself.

In August, 1961, a confidential source advised that Edward Kennedy had
recently dined with Dr. Lauchlin Bernard Currie, former White House Aide to President
Roosevelt. Currie's name had been mentioned in Washington investigations of Soviet spy
rings. It was also noted that Dr. Currie had recently been invited to the U. S. Embassy
at Bogata, Columbia, where Currie presently resides.
In October, 1961, a confidential source on Portuguése_matters advised that
Edward Kennedy was planning to enter politics and had retained one
an attorney in Boston, to be his advisor on how to obtain Portuguese votes in Massachusdts
This source described] _____]as being a rightest and an extremist on behalf of the
Portuguese Government. Inasmuch as there was a question as to whetherL_____—| should
be registered as a foreign agent with the Departm ice, Attorney General Kennedy
