7 The "Washington City News Service" release of
1-257 contained an item under the heading, "Eastland," which
stated that the NAACP in a letter signed by Roy Wilkins,
NAACP Executive Secretary, had appealed to the Senate to
exclude Senator James 0. Eastland, (D-Miss.) from the Senate
Judiciary Comnittee for hia statements and activities opposing
desegregation. It was indicated that the appeal waa sent
to 79 Senators from non-Southern states.

The "Birmingham News," Red Star Final, Birninghan
Ala., on 1-2-57 carried an article datelined New York, entitled:
"NAACP Will Not Disclose Ala. Members," The article was an
announcenent from the national office of the NAACP indicating that
the organization did not intend to file its membership list.
tn Alabama. Roy Wilkins, NAACP Executive Secretary, pointed
out tn the announcement, that the situation in Alabama wae
different from that in Louisiana where the organization had
begun filing such lista following a suit by the state for
non-compliance. Wilkins stated there was no such statutory
requirement in Alabama.
