AURJECT's PASSPORT APPLICATION OF MARCH 21, 1957
On Karch 21, 1957, at New York, New York, PAUL
ROBESON executed an application for passport. In that
application he stated he was born April 9, 1898, at Princeton,
New Jersey, and maintained permanent residence at 16 Jumel
Terrace, New York, New York. He stated that during the period
1928 to 1939, hebad resided in England, and that during the
month of May, 1950, he bad resided in Europe. He listed his
father as WILLIAM DREW ROBESON, born 1843 in North Carolina,
and his mother as LOUISA BUSTILL ROEESON, born 1853 in Pennsylvania.
He indicated that his parents are deceased, Subject stated
he was last married in August, 1921, to ESLANDA GOODE ROBESON,
who was born December 15, 1896, at Washington, D, C,.
Subject stated his last passport was issued to him
on May 8, 1947; that it was subsequently renewed and later _
revoked by the Department of State.
Regarding his travel plans, subject stated he
intended to depart from the United States at the Port of New

abroad of six months in order to visit England, and Czechoslovakia
for the purpose of "to sing and act."
Subject's wife served as the identification witness.
In answer to the questions, "Are you now a member of
the Communist Part#’ and "Have you ever been a member of the
‘Communist Party?", subject wrote “see rider." a - 7
Attached to subject's passport application Was a
rider consisting of an affidavit sworn to by subject at the
Passport Office, New York, New York, on March 21, 1957,
which stated;
"] decline to answer the questions as to memberstip in
the Communist Party onthe following grounds:
"(1) My consitutional rights and privileges.
“(2) The Department's demand is an sttoonted evasion
of the decision of the Court of Appeals in ROBESON v. DULLES,
C, A., D. C., No. 12983, which deferred consideration of the
