June 28th Session The Metro-Final Edition of the "Detroit Free Press” on June 29, 1957, page 3, column 3, fn an article entitled “NAACP Honors Boycott Leader" states that 3,000 people filled the Ford Auditorium at 7245 p.m. on Friday night, June 28, 1957, to see the WAACP honor Reverend Doctor MARTIN LUTHER KING of Montgomery, Alabama, with the coveted Spingarn Medel. The article states that this medal wes,presented to Reverend KING by the Right Reverend RICHARP S. EMRICH, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan. This medal was presented to Reverend KING for his leadership in the desegregation fight in Montgomery, Al ochomaea The above article also reported that Representative CHARLES C. DIGGS, JR. spoke at this meeting and paid tribute to Vice-President NIXON for fostering friendship for America during his recent trip throug! Africa and for his fight to bring the Civil Rights Bill ° to the floor of the Senate.
