An article appears on page 34, column one
of the June 27, 1957, Red Line Edition of the “Detroit
Times," a daily newspaper of general circuletion in
Detroit, captioned “"Reuther Lashes Civil Rights Lag
in Congress." The article states that 4 mass meeting
of approximately 2,500 persons on June 26, 1957, at the
NAACP Convention, heard WALTER REYVIHER, President of the
UAW, and JOSEPH L. RAUH, JR., National Chairman of the ?
Americens for Democratic Action. In his speech, Mr.
REUTHER ts reported to have criticized Senator EASTLAND ee
of Mississippi for consistently blocking civil rights
Jegislation. REUTHER is quoted as stating “'EASTLAND
doesn't Imow anything about Communists. We (the UAW,
ADA, and NAACP) do more in one week to combat Commnism
then these people do in a lifetime."
The above article mentions that JOSEPH L.
. of Americans for Democratic Action who precéted
Mr, REUTHER on the stand outlined a h-point program
to supplement the NAACP's legal fight for survival in the
south and called on the President, the Vice-President,
the Justice Department, and all national organizations
believing in civil rights, for support. ;
