The NAACP was born when MARY WHIT: OVINWGTON,
its first member, met with WILLIAM LNGLISH WALLING, a
columnist, during the first week of January, 1909, in
a small room of a new York apartinent.
The first conference was hela on the evening
of say 30, 1909, st Zooper Union, New York City. Over
LOOO guests were invitce and the initial conference was
consicered A success.
It was not until the second conference held
in May, 1910, that the group organizcd a permancnt body
to be known es the National f¢ssociation for the sdvancement
of Solored reoplc. Its first officers were listad as
follows:
