Many persons interviewed sentioned that Purvis was responsib
for the capture or killing of John Dillinger on July 22, 1934, at
Cnuicago. They pointed out that Purvis nad capitalized on this by
public appearances, speeches and magazloe articles, subsequent to his
leaving tne PBI in 1935. In order to set the record straight, therefo:
a brief, factual account of that incident has been set forth in the
,enclissed Summary memorandum stating that, although Purv:;s was at the
scene, he did not fire on Dillinger, and that the over-aii operation
to apprehend Dillinger was under the direction of the jate Tuspector
Samuel P. Cowley.
