Eastland (D-Miss.), chairman, above Le committee, by letter dated 9/1/50, received in Special Inquiry Be oy ok n1g} Sec tion..9/3/59,- bas requested an investigation of Mr. Purvis, a an employee of the Subcommittee on Improvements in Judicial Machinery. Mr. Purvis is a former Bureau Agent who resigned in 1935. Similar requests nave been nonored for several years by the Bureau, and it is pointed out toat former Attorney General Herbert Brownell and the then Deputy Attorney General William P. Rogers, at a conference beld on 6/14/54 in the Attorney General's office, authurized the Bureau to continue to undertake investigations of the members of the staifs of certain Copgressional cummittees upon request of tne chairman thereof. This agreement was confirmed by the Director's Beboraudum tou the Atturney General oun 7, 2/54, a copy of which a was sent tu the then Deputy Atturoey General Rogers. The = Senate Committee on the Judiciary is one of these committees. - RECOMMENDATIONS : i That the attacned airtel vse transmitted to the field opening the requested investigation 2.
