At the time of this conversation, Inspector (a stated that a
he had written a letter to the New York Office of the Federal Bureau of
Investigation requesting information re-srding the Subject. (The report *
of Special Agent dated Cstober 9, 1912, at Los Angeles, .; Feedba ters ott
California, set out leads for the New York Field Division and the local
office of Immigration and Naturalization Service was advised of this fact
in a letter dated January 1h, 1943.)
Inspector GHEE volunteered the information to Special Agent
ED :: follows: "Qur report is almost finished, we are waiting .
or your report, that is all that is holding it up". ‘
In response to her request, Special Agent QMtelephonically
contacted MARLENE DIETRICH on March 25, 1913, at which time she was told
again that granting of citizenship or withholding of same came under the
jurisdiction of the Immigration and Naturalization Service, Miss DIETRICH
expressed disappointment and stated "I thought it was being suspended
awaiting a report from yur office", to which she was told that any delay
which had occurred was at the discretion of the Immigration and Naturalization
Service and that any detailed information regarding this matter-should be
obtained from that governmental agency. Misa DIETRICH replied that she was
of the opinion that there was nothing to do but waite
This matter is being called to the attenfior of the Bureau, inasmuch
as the possibility exists that Miss DIETRICH will e this matter directly
to the President of the United States, FRANKLIN De ROOSEVELT, She mentioned eipesdatthe mitra
that at the time of her departure for Europe sever years ago, Treasury
agents had impounded her baggage and jewels for federal taxes, at which time
she personally called Secretary of the Treasury MORGENTHAU and had the matter
adjusted to her entire satisfaction in an expeditious manners
In view of the above, it is requested that the New York Office
give expeditious attention to the leads set out in the ° report mentioned in
the body of this letter.
