A dimer was given for these individuals on the night of October 18, 1938
at the Hotel Commodore, New York City, and was the cccasion for the lodging
of a drive for $150,000. to bring beck other American volunteers in Spaing
Among the speakers of the evening was LILLIAN HELIMAN, The dinner was given
by the Friends of the Rbraham Lincoln Brigades
The October 27, 1938 issue of the Deily Worker stated that the
Comittee to Aid Excluded Ioyalist Veterans was attempting to save 12
veterans of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade from deportation, The committee was
joined by the International Labor Defense in this undertaking. LILLIAN
HELLMAN was one of a delegation of persons who visited the men on Ellis
Island, reported on their condition and stressed the importance of bringing
pressure to bear on the Secretary of Labor to permit these men to enter the
United Statese
In 1938 Mise HELLMAN was a sponsor of the organisation result-
ing from a merger of the North American Committee to Aid Spanish Democracy
and the Medical Bureau to Aid Spanish Democracy, according to a booklet.
entitled “Children in Concentration Camps" published by the merged organiza~
tions
According to a circular of the United spain Eid Committee to
Free the men of the International B Brigade vo volunteers in h and Spaniah
concentration camps, Miss HELIMAN was one of the sponsors of a campaign of that
organizations
According to the February 7, 1939 issue of the "People’s
World® LILLIAN HELIVAN was one of the 78 American writers who signed an appeal
for the lifting of the Bnbargo which prevented the Spanish Republic from
buying arms for its defense,
The above-mentioned "people's World®, which is a Communist
publication, for February 14, 1939 indicated that Miss HELIMAN was one of the
prominent Bmerican writers who visited Madrid, Spein, during the Spanish Civil
Wars
The February 25, 1939 issue of the Daily Worker containe4 an
item stating that LILLIAN HELDMAN was one of a Committee of Women Civic and
Society Leaders who joined the picket line at the Italian Consulate in New
York City on the afternnon of February 24, 1939 to protest the Italian invasion
of Spaing
The March 22, 1939 issue of the Daily Worker stated that miss
HELLUAN was one of the sponsors of a campaign to raise $160,000. for ths
disabled veterans fund launched by the Friends of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade.
The money was to be used to rehabilitate and provide medical care and attention
