Lawrence Albert Townsend, prioner No.C-S48 at
the aforesaid penitentiary, was interviewed by agent, at which time
he was closely questioned concerning his knowledge of Galatas and
his present whereebouts. He advised that he had never used the
heme of W. G.BAllen; th:t be was serving his present sentence under
bis true name, which is Lawrence Albert Townsend. He said he is
54 years of age and was born at Chestertown, Maryland; that he went
to a male grammar school, Ho.19, at Baltimore, Md. and subsequently
attended and gradueted from the City College at Baltimore. He said
thet although he was arrested eas a con man on three previous .
- occasions in the United Stetes, nemely at New York City, Philadelphia,
and Syracuse, he was never convicted before; that the four years’
sentence imposed on him at Quebec, Canade was hie first conviction
which conviction he asserted was a “bun rap."
Townsend steedfastly denied mowing or ever
mesting Galetas in his life and aside from reading in the newspapers
about him had never heard of him before. He asserted that he -hed
never in hia life been in Hot Springs, ark. or of having been
arrested in Beaumont, Tazas, as mentioned in the letter of
reference, He said he bad spent most of his time in the Fest
occasionally visiting St. Louis, Mo., stopping there st the Foodward
Hotel; that he left New York City for Canada in the middle part of
June, 1933 and was arrested by the Canadian police in July, 1933
in quebec, Canada, which resulted in his conviction on January
®, 1934 on a charge of conspiracy to defraud. He added that
while in New York City be resided at the erial Hotel, Send Street
and Broadway, under the neme of Herbert E.gClark,.
As auggested in the letter of refererce, the
neme of Chief of Police Baker of Port Arthur, Texas, was discreetly
mentioned to Townsend, to which he etated that he does not know
him and had never heard of him and reiterated that. he hed never ‘
in his life been in the State of Texas.
