I wish to sutmit the following concerning the escape of
VERNON ¢. MILLER from the Sherone 4partments on the night of November
1, 198:
On Saturday, October 28, 1935, immediately after Special
Agents HE. Pp. Guinane end J. J. Keating received information fran Mrs.
Polachek, Henager of the Sherone apartments, as to the positive identi-
fication of the party Living in Room 211 under the name of Clara tT.
Hayes, being VIVIAN MATHIS, the paramour of Verne ijiller, I was instructed
by Acting Speciel Agent in Charge Lb. 0. Smith to proceed to the vicinity
of the Sherone apartments and make inquiry at neighboring apartment
buildings in an endeevor to obtein an apartment from which a good view
could be had, through the window, into apartment 211 et ihe Sherone Apts,
occupied by vivian Hiathis; however, no such apartment was evailable and
on reporting this information to hr. D. O- Smith by telephone, 1 was
4--tructed by him to report to the office.
Upon my arrivel at the office, I was informed by Special
Agent Keating that hehad just completed arrangements with ltrs, Polachek
to get me into Room 207 at the Sherone Apartments. J accordingly registered
there with my wife, as Mr. end Mrs. John L. Malleck, of Buffelo, N.Y.,
‘ndicating to the hotel menagement that I was employed as a4 traveling
auditor and thet my stey in Chicego wes indefinite.
Por your information, my apartment was in the same corridor
as Room 211, but on the opposite side; further, the corridor in thet wing
is approximately sixty feet long, Room 211 being on the fer east end of
the corridor and my room on the extreme west end, about fifty feet apart.
The door of my apartment, which opened on to the corridor, wes so situsted
eas to eneble a person to observe enyone entering or leaving eny apartne nt
in thct wing.
My wife and I maintained surveillance on Room 211 all day .
Sunday and ionday, October 29 and oC, 1933, but no one wes seen entering
or deperting from that room on either day. On Tuesdey Horning, October 31,
1953, about 7:30 a.M., Agent L. D. Nichols, temporarily assigned to this
