Kindly refer to my report at Kansas City, Missouri, dated
October 27, 1933, regarding the plans formulated and the attempt ;
made to bring about the apprehension of Wilber)tUnderhill at Poteau,
Oklahoma, on the night of October 19, 1933. It will be noted in
the report in question that a woman friend of Underhill, who shelter-
ed him at the time of his escape from the Cklehoma State Penitentiary,
was used as an informant. It will also be noted that this women oc-
cupied a room in the Witters Hotel at Poteau, and that Underhill sent
to her during the afternoon of October 19th a contact man to ascertain
whether she were present at the hotel, this contact man advising that
he would returo about 8:30 o'clock the same evening with Underhill.
It will be noted that we were not able to determine why Underhill did
not proceed to the hotel at the time in question. ;
There is teing transmitted herewith copy, in duplicate, of a
letter addressed to me by Under-sheriff Lee Babb at Poteau, Oklehoma,
dated Novemter 1, 1933, which reflects that wiilber Underhillts con-
tact man, during the evening of October 19, 1933, proceeded to the
Witters Hotel, which we had under careful surveillance at that time;
fie contact man apparently attempted to enter the Witters Hotel, but
found the front screen door locked. It appears the reason the screen
door was locked was tecause of the fact that the County Judge.at Poteau
had entered the hotel in a drunken condition a short time prior there-
to. Ths movenents of this contact man were observed by one of the
party which had the hotel under surveillance. Hie identity was not
