M, Welch, General Manager of the | Telephone Company at Detroit, to procure information as to the roan number of © ur. Hay 8, who was alleged to bave called Vivien at chicago. No toll ticket © covering any cell such es thet described by agent Keating could be found and & further telephone conversation with Agent Keating revealed that the cal] in question hed been placed at Chicago by Vivien Miller and not at Detroit by Mr. Hays. Agent Keating further atated that bie information had been procured second-hand through an informant from the books of the Sherome Apertnents, which showed that on 10-21-53 at 4:50 A. M., Mre. Hays, of thie apartment house, bad a t- of the call at Detroit, agent Keating was requested to locate the toll ticket in question through the Telephone Company at Chicago, in order thet accurate date might be obtained, but due to the latenese of the hour and the following Sunday, the desired deta was not furnished antil Mondey, 10-3035 at 3:55 P.M. Police Camiseioner ‘John Pp, smith ‘of Detroit was finelly 10 cated after midnight, Saturday night, and through him a conference was arranged — ..with Mr, Fred ¥. Frahm, Chief of Detectives, Detroit. Through the latter, =. information was procured from Mr, Chittendon, Manager of the Book-Cadillec a en Hotel in Detroit to the effect that he wes well acquainted with Mr. Rainey, . °°’ former Maneger of the Royal Palm Hotel, who still lived there, and representing - the Detroit Truet Company, Receivers of the Hotel, bea deity business: there... od Mr, Rainey wae located et the Hotel Bidington, cadiliee 9680, to which, it developed, he had moved within the past fow deys. Through Mr. Rainey - information was obtained to the effect that Jack Arenson, residence telephone North 3600, 1s the night clerk who was on duty st the Royal Palm Hotel fran 11:00 P. M. to 7:00 A. M., on October 20 - 2), 1933. Mr. Rainey did not know the reputation of Areneon or what credence could be placed in him, and other available sources of information were to the sane effect.
