On July 19, 1033, Sheriff J. J. Bailey of the Monroe,
Michigan, Sheriff's Department, communicated with thie office stat~-
ing that one of his deputies while patroling the highway near ’
Monroe had arrested a man who gave his name as Earlishelton, alias -
Malcolm\McNeil, aliae HeroldiGaines, on July 15, while Shelton was |
removing a battery from a Chryeler Sedan parked on the highway; that
sometime following his arrest Shelton made a statement te the sher-
iff to the effect that he was riding in a Whippet Sedan with two
men whose names he stated were Jack Miller alias Vern Miller, end
@ Bill}Wiseman, and that it was while riding along the road near
Monroe that these three men observed an individual leaving the
Chryeler Sedan and took it upon themselves to remove the battery.
When the Deputy Sheriff approached Shelton, the two *“
mon in the Whippet Sedan, who were parked some distance away, i
quickly departed and have not been seen since. It was because of |
the names Yorn Miller and Bill Wiseman, mentioned by Shelton, that -
the Sheriff communicated with thie office, Knowing that a Vern.
Miller wae connected with the massacre at Kaneas City. 4
Special Agente Meckins and Stukes were imnediately
dispatched to Monroe and interrogated Shelton, who related thet
some tine during the latter part of June, approximate date not
known, he left Jefferson City, Missouri, and went to Wasbington,
Missouri, to obtain work; that be expected to engage in the liquor
racket, and while at Washington he contacted a man wom he knows
only as WangiejMorris, e bootlegger who he claims resides about
two miles from Weshington et a sort of roadhouse. He claims to
easually know Morris. Upon his arrival at this plece he mt tro
men, one who geve hie name as Vern Miller, and the other Bill
Wiseman. These men he states were in the Morris roadhouse.
