Floyd at this time in ansser to query of Reed, according
to the latter, said that he had nothing to do betwoen that particular
point and Atlanta.
Special Agent R. LE. Peterson siso reported that at the
time he interviewed Seed that the latter had been drinking,
Agent Peterson also contacted kr. J, W. Slaughter, Sales
Lanager for the serr Glass Company, under whose supervision Reed is
enployed, and Slaughter cleims that Reed is very reliable and that the
latter hed also teld him of having seen Floyd at hew Providence, Tennessee,
Special agents J, L. LicCaffrey and J, i. Towler in New
Providence, Tennessee, as is stated in the letter of reference, had
contacted GO. C. varnell of the Austin Filling Station who stated that he
had not recalled any euch party as having been at that station on July 6,
1933, and when subsequently contacted again by Special Agent J. Le. |
licCaffrey advised that he did not recall having serviced three Marmon
sedans on June 20, 1933, as has been stated by Reed. Darnell advised
that he does not recall servicing any such automobiles either prior ar
‘since that date, further that he was the only one on duty at his service.

Agents LicCeffrey and Towler also interviewed lir. W. C.
Austin, who owns a general store adjacent to the Austin Filling Station,
and he also said that he had seen no such party at New Providence, Tenn.
Agents also interviewed Lr. C. ii, Riggins of the Gulf Filling Station,
lir. C. 0. Presten of the Standard 011 Filling Station, and liar. Richard
Eoffman, who operates an independent station at New Previdence, Tennessee,
fand which stations tnclude all of those in New Providence) all of whom
stated they hed seen no such party in that vicinity.
These Agents, also, reported that Lr. M. H. Watt, with
whom C. Frank Reed, the originator of this story, lived at Clarksville,
Tennessee, at the time that Reed claimed to have seen Floyd at New
Providence, stated tiat at the time Reed was at his home in Clarksville
he was more or less under the influence of liquor at all times.
