INTERVIEW WITH interview was conducted Special Agent
GEORGE J. STELTE Gitinth September 22, ods. tn view of it
mation furnished by JACK GLASGOW. GLASGOW ad-
vised thet one SAM WILLS, Division Superintendent of Peabody Coal Company,
Taylorville, Illinois, contacted GLASGOT concerning the rdail coal account
of the Leland Hotel held by the Springfield Office of the Peabody Coal
Company. WILLS pointed out that the Leland Hotel eecount had been cut ap-
proximately in half sometime after Novembor, 1939. GLASGOW stated that he
went to RAY EDMUNDSON in connection with this matter, and EDMUNDDON replied
that it was none of GLASGOW's businesa, WILLS is now deceased.
GEORGE J. STELTE of Peabody Coal Company Retail Office, 124 South
ixth Street, Springfield, Illinois (home residence -
Wile = icceieia, Illinois) furnished the following information;
He stated that prior to 1957, ths Pogbody Coal Company had nad
Lelond Hotel busincss on and off. He could/fécell whether or not Peabody
Coal Company had hed Leland Hotel account prior to 1932 or subscquent to
and before 1937, but stated thet undoubtedly during part of thatt imo, tho
Leland Hotel ascourt had been with Penbody Coal Companys He produced o
record card of the Leland Hotel which showed that the present Leland Hotel
account was storted in June of 1937. In Mey of 1937, the dete with which
thet particular card account started was blank. For the year 1937 - 1958,
1,167.20 tons of coal wore mld by Poabody to the Loland Hotel. This was
the full requirement of tho Leland Hotel; 1938 - 1939, 1,595.80 tons; i559 -
1940, 1,538.28 tons; in 1940 - 1941, tho total tons sold wore 78&.78. For
the month of April, 1939, Peabody Coal Company sold tho Leland Hotel 149.44
tons. For April, 1940, the company sold the Leland Hotol 60.40 tone. It
was noted that in April, 1940, the volume of coal sold to tho Leland Botel
by the Peabody Coal Company was cut approximately in half.
Mr. STELTE advisod that when tho volum of businosa with the
Leland Hotel had dropped off approximately 50 per cent, he mentioned the
matter to SAM WILLS, Division Superintendent, Foabody Conl Company at
Ty lorville, Illinois. He requested Mr. WILLS to use his good offico in
any way possible to attempt to secure all of tho Leland Hotel's bust nese.
He stated thot undoubtedly WILLS contacted GLASGOW on the matter since they
were both in Toylorville, Illinois. STELTE did not contact GLASGOW directly
because of the fect that GLASGOW wes located in Taylorvillo. He stated that
he undoubtodly and probably did. contact RAY EDMUNDSON concerning the Le~
and Hotel account. He does not recall definitely EDMUNDSON's reply sx-
cept that it wos generally to the effect that tho bost EDMUNDSON could do
was to secure approximtely 50 per cent of the Leland Hotel business for
Mr. STELTE wos eithor intentionally wogue or slse he has a poor
f thie latter circumstance.
