to sign one statement, because he did not want to get mixed up in anything.
Re is a person of average intelligence and would make an average witness.
He gave information set forth in the following statement, which he refused
to: sign:
“Springfield, Ill.
September 18, 1943,
I am now employed at Mine A

who have identified themselves to mc to be Special Agents o
Bureau of Investigation. No promises, threats, or consideration of any kind
hes been made to me to mekc this statement.
#T have worked at Kine & for about a: I was working
for Bill. Ryan at the timc thet he sold the mine to Slshoff. J have never
been interested in wion affairs, and have paid many fines for not attend-
ing union meetings. Before Ryan sold the mine, there was not talk, as fer
as I know, about changing unions. I do not know how the other men felt,
because I never discussed the matter with them. I personally did not care
which union I belonged to, at that time, as I was not interested in any of
them.
"I wont to the meeting ot tho Elk's Hall when the men voted to go
into the Iitw. I do not remember what was said that day, or why it was that
I joined the UM. then. I think I had decided to join the IW, but I do not
remember why. I had talked to a few mon about it, but not many, and I do not
remember what they had told me about it.
