"I first joined a mine union, the United Minc “orkers, about
or while I was workinz for tho eerremerrsemmii Springfield, Ill.
IT stayed in this union until I joined the Progressiva fine “-orkers of America
in 1932. I rejoined the U.u.7. when I was working in Mino A. I don't recall
ths exact date.
"Prior to the strike in 1937 I recall hearing something about some
argunonts and incidents at Mine B, but I don't recall what they were about.
Frior to the strike I don't recall that one ever tried to persunde me to
join the U.IL.... However, I co reesil vot ons day told me
and my father, when he esaliecd st our house, erc was going to be
trouble at Minc B. Ec did not give any more information, and because both
my father and I vere P.M.A. men we paid no attention to . Everything
was going smoothly at Mine B. All of the miners seemd e sitisfied with
F.“.4. I thought it was a good union, and that the leaders were trying to
co zood for the miners.
"I went to some of the F.M.A. meetings. As I recall, wo had to
attcnd at leest one mecting a month. At those moetings everyone hac the chance
to spsak his piece, I don't roccll any discussion at those meetings about
the bombings that were going on obout thet time.
“Some timo before the strike in 1937 I heard something about an
argument between some of ths drivers and QM J don't remembcr any
of the details, but as I recall he was supposed to Beweurrying a knife. I
don't know if he was said to be o spy for U.M..., or if there was any talk ,
ebout U.N... spies in the mino at that time.
