Mr. COLEMAN informed that he would assume full responsibility for develop-
ing the names ef ecmpetent witnesses to introduce the documentary evidence
developed by that organisation and would also assume responsibility for the
location of the original docusents. In this eomection it is belisved ad
vieable for the Bureau to eommmicate with the Department in erder that a
written oonfirmation may be recelved from the Department to this effect,
In comection with the preparation of reports in this oase Mr.
COLEMAN informed it would not be necessary to set cut in detail the various
dooumentary evidence submitted to the Bureau in the form ef photostatle
eopies. He said it would be entirely satiefactory merely te refer to each
exhibit by number for eornvenience in locating these documents in connection
with date set forth in the investigative reports. He also specifically
requested that no eopies of the report in this eoneotion be furnished at
this time to the lecal United States Attorney.
With reference to the seops of the investigation, Mr. COLEMAN ina-
dioated it would be advisable to interview all of the 475 miners who were at
work at Mine B on May 12, 1937, which was the date the mine was closed by
a strike. Be pointed out that if a mjority of these miners would be
willing to testify that they were liberated from what they considered the
| tyramy of the P.M.W. officials, euch testimony would tend to show JOBN L.
LEWIS as a ohampion of eivil rights rather then a violator.
In connection with the 475 miners mentioned in the above paragraph,
Mr. COLEMAN requested that signed statements be obtained from each person
interviewed, even though the information furnished might be of a negative
nature,
