In 1930, Goddard made a ballistte erantnatien
tn the nurder case of Mary Baker in Virginta, and took
the stand tn connection with the trial of one Campbell.
Campbell subsequently brought eutt against Geddard fer
libel and consequential damage in the anount of $500,000.
The sutt was allegedly based on an answer made by Goddard
to a reporter the day before the trtal tn which Goddard
said his analysis had identified the fatal bullet with
the pistol and, tf the ptetol had never left the hands ef
Campbell, then Canpbell would be the guilty person. This
sutt was withdraun tn October, 1932. Campbell was never
convicted and the Baker case ts sttll unsolved. (70-1056-24
In 1931, Goddard testified in another trtal as to
the tdentification of a fatal bullet with a recovered gun
and used photegraphiec charts to tllustrate his identift-
catton. The jury returned the verdict of "Not Gutlty*.
Subsequently, another suspect was trted for the murder
and convicted. The conuteted subject signed a confession
and tdentified the gun with which he had committed the
murder. The Chteago Office of the Bureau afterwards ob-=
tatned the charts used by Goddard and a study of them by
the Bureau firearms experts brought the concluston that
the photographs contradicted rather than substantiated
the identtfication. (80-89-33-6)
In Mareh, 1938, tnformatten was recetved that in
the Sacco-Vanzetti case, Goddard had made an examination
of an autematic pistol supposedly taken from Sacco and
informed the prosecuting attorney that while the bullet
found in the deceased person was of the same ealibre, he
would not testify that it came from Sacco’s gun. At
the tnsistenoe of the prosecuting official, however,
Geddard dtd take the stand and testified that, due te the
caltbre of the slug taken from the body of the dead person,
tt was possible that tt could have been fired from such a
gun as that taken from Sacco. Fhen the case came up fer
