Re: INTERNsTIONAL CRIMINAL POLICE COMMISSION
- Dear Sir:
Please refer to my letter to the Sureau dated November 26, 1947,
and the Bureau's reply thereto dated December 24, 1947, regarding the Bureau's
attitude toward the Commission's desire to offer the Secret -ervice and
Narcotics Bureau of the U. ©. ‘Treasury Department particioation in the Van-
a
mission's activities.
at the recent General .ssembly meetings of the Cornmission held at
Prague last month, a Subcommittee on Narcotics was created and the Commission
is now desirous of inviting the .arcotics Bureau to participate in the functions
of this committee. ..s heretofore reported, they are also desirous of establish-
jing direct liaison and participation of the vecret vervice in their Subcommittee
on Counterfeiting. In this connection I have again been approached by the” * _
cecretary-General of the commission recuesting that I call this matter to the f
attention of the Bureav, and solicit its attitude toward inviting the ‘reasury ’
Lesartment to take oart in the Vormission's work in their resnective fields. *.
In this connection, the Commission has pointed out that, although
they are perfectly satisfied with the Bureau's services in acting as iiaison
with the Treasury Jepartment, they, nevertheless, feel that mre effective
cooperation and results could be obtained by maintaining direct liaison. Cn
the other hand, they are not desirous of insisting on this relationship if
the Bureau has any objections. Parenthetically, and as reflected by their —
latest financial report, the -rench Jovernment is bearing the zreater part
of the financial burden and they are hopeful that if arrangements could be
mde for the Treasury vepartment to carticipate directiy in the activities
of the Commission, that they might be able to contribute financially to the
support of the Covmission, setosnep dg j
