The labor movement can derive great advantage froma school of its om. This was —
amply shown at the Tennessee State Ci0 Convention by the participation of Highlender
students and by demands upon the school for help. Locals were usged to make full use
of the school.
Theo Van Landingham, -UAW #903 (summer '41) presided over.tho opening session of
the convention in his capacity as President of the Hemphis Indusvrial Union Council and
had the rare privilege of introducing the Liayor of Memphis. a city which has long re-
Sisted the coming of the CIO. Matt Lynch, AF. Director of the Tri-State Area, (sun
mer '35 and President of the HFS Alumni Asseciation) responded to the mayor's edtress.
Matt and Van were also on the arrangements committee. Emil Willimetz, CIO Represent-
ative and Chairman of the Knoxville IU@ (Fall '40) and Ed Blair, ACWA organizer (Fall

State Couneil for the coming year. . .
Members of the school's Exesutive Council wera very much in evidence «- Fred Pieper,
Regional Director from Louisiana, repreventing Allan Heywood, Alton Lawrence, Hollis
Reid, Kiss Luey Mason, Ed Calleghon, Matt Lynch, and Paul Christopher who was elected
thes new Fresident of the State Council. The program of the school was discussed with
James Carey, Seeretary, CIO.

crovwine realization of the use which the labor movement in Tennessee can make of the
resiacnt workere school right in the heart of the state:
"In addition to giving organized labor its rightful
piace in public education, unions should promote their
own educational programs. Such educational programs
are besoming incroasingly important to old our gains
and to organize during a war situation. The Inbor
movement in Tennessee should make full use of the res~
7 : ident workers school in Tennessee, the Highiander Folk
School, and Southern School for Workers, sending mem-
bers to ettend the two and six weeks terms for inten-
sive training, using the schools for institutes and
conferences, and calling on the steff for extension
programs in various citics.® .
