"THE NEW ORLEANS PROGRAM
Mery Lawrence, Highlancer extension director, is back in New
Orleans where she is in the midst cf ccnducting an educational
prosram under the sponsorship of the Incustrial Union Council.
Mianric has beenin New Orleans since about April 1, except for
the two weeks she returned te Highlander to teach at the twe weeks
tarm. Four cfficials of local wnicns were selected by the Council
to attend the term, and already they arc miking use of their
Hishlander training bY assisting with the cducational program back
home. Lavric recently wrote "Tenight I meet a genera] educational
committee with the four HFS kids ( apologies to Hazel, Boo Boo,
Blackie, and Alvin - Lawrie didn't know this letter was for pub-
licaticn} as the backbone. They have already given good account
ef themselves, and I think they are going to be a tremendous help
tome,"
The New Orleans extension program began with an Officers!
Training Schocl, with 120 attending the cpening meeting. Classes
in public speaking and parliamentary law, union publicity, labor
history, and union prcblems were set up, and were scheduled several
times a week so as to give all whe desired a chance te attend.
The pepularity of public speaking and parliamentary law has made
it advisable in the future to separate the two, and run them both
as full length classes,
The first termd the Officerst Training School ended uey 9
with a speaker cn the National Labor Relations Act; a panel discus-
Sicn on "Takince up Grievances" with five CIO represcntatives parti-
cipating; and a "Labor's Infermaticn, Please" ecntest.
4t present, the New Orleans precgran is cencentrating on an
effcrt to help newly crganized lccals understand and cvercome
their problems. Classes in parliamentary lew, public speaking, and
general wmnion cducetion have been started for all unicn members on
beth sides of the River. <A special course for shcp stevards and shop
comumitteemen on "Taking up Grievances" opened June 4. In addition,
lawric is conducting educational programs for individual unions.
The Inland Boatmen Divisicn cf the NIU selectcd a small group who
desire to learn hov to cive the membership as a whcle a better
understanding of their erginization. The class started with an
analysis cf thsir contract. Ciasses in public speaking and parliamen-
tary law are being held for the Transport Workers Union. Other unions
have requested special classes.
