Among the representatives of the 15 AF of L, CIO, and unaffiliated
naticnal crganizaticns were sugar and construction workers from ,
New Orleans, boatment and packing hcuse workers frem Memphis, and
teachers, cffice workers and miners from eicht states. With few
excepticns, the students were officials cf newly formed organizations.
The regular staff was assisted by 1 Williaaffaves, regicnal Wage and
Hour director; Hollis We reid, legislative representative cf the
Railréad Brotherhood and the chhirman of the Tennessee Comncnvealth
Federation; Paul RpXChristopher, state CIO seeretary; Lewigtgones,
Amoricen Federation cf Teachers, Fisk University; Wiiliarpenton,
chairmen Atlanta Industrial aie Council and member of the United

Automobile Workers; Margar mont, writer; Dr. Waltem =
strouch, Industrial Engineering Department, Columbia University;
Bo and Riton Lawrence, Southern LNPL representative. Pecple from the
, local community joined the students in evening classes,
Forsig square dances, picnics anc ball games. A-farewell banquet and
propram gf laber songs, puppets and plays erded the session.
Williem*Davis, 2 National Meritime Union students was toastmaster.
The two weeks session provided an opportunity for various southern
groups to get together. Eighty-one representatives of twenty-
three national unions from all branches of labor met for a week-
end conference on "Labor and Politics." The officials and a number
a of executive board members of the Tennessee Commonwealth Federation
gar! were present. Among the officials of the Southern Conferghce for
Human Welfare at the school were vice-president Virgini r; the
farm representative, Gerald*pfarris of the Alabama Farmérs Union;
Josep folders, secretary of the Civil Rights Committee; and Alton
~} Lawrence, acting secretary for the Conference. More than a score of
ay southern crganizers were also present.
The summer term of industrial, farm and office workers will begin
August 16 and run for six weeks. Mrs. Roosevelt and other friends
of the school have. provided a limited number of scholarships.
Student applications arc being accepted.
As a part of Highlander's ycar-round program, Mary Lawrence of the
staff is conducting an officers' training school fqr the New Orleans
Industrial Council. The opening sessioh was attended by 120 local
officials. She will be assisted by four students who were selected
by the Council to attend the spring session."
